Let’s talk about photo editing trends.
I’m not a fan.
Trends right now- “light & airy” where everything looks a little blown out and colors are muted and pastel, and the “dark & moody” editing trend- with oversaturated colors and orange-ish skin tones. (Yes, some people do it better than others- even well, but it’s still a trend.)
They will fall out of popularity & these photographers will have to reinvent their style again in a year or two. One of the many reasons I’m all about timeless portraits.
I’ve been at this for a long time (17 years this year!) and have seen a lot of editing trends come & go. I’ve even tried one or two. There was the “matte” trend- where black tones were softened and the images had no contrast. Then the HDR trend- which was flattering to… no one. I dabbled for about four minutes into the “vintage” editing trend- when I look back at images from that time looks like someone put a pee-colored filter on the photos. Oh, and how could we forget selective coloring? Eeesh.
I think what I’m trying to say here is this- there’s a photographer out there for everyone, whatever your preferences are. But as someone deeply rooted in photojournalism, you won’t see me hop on another editing trend. I never want a client to look at their photos & say they are “very 2008.” (the pee filter era )
What do you think? Do you like heavily edited images or more of a timeless look? Do you have an editing trend you loathed or loved?
