The Van Metre 5 Mile Run for Children’s National Medical Center is a longstanding annual tradition, and to date has raised over $2.7 million for the hospital. In 2010, Children’s National Medical Center dedicated The Van Metre Companies Cardiovascular Surgery Operating Room, a state-of-the-art cardiovascular surgery suite which was funded by monies raised by the Annual Van Metre 5-Mile Run. In the first year, approximately 1,000 surgeries were performed in the surgery suite.
I loved photographing this event this year on a perfectly chilly Saturday morning-the best kind of weather to run in! By the time the runners crossed the finish line for their donuts and pizza, it was quite warm and it was time to give out some amazing prizes and awards. I adore photographing events for Children’s National, and this one was no different. VM does an amazing job on putting together this run- it’s kid-friendly, interesting and a heck of a great time.
The 26th Annual Van Metre 5-Mile Run and One-Mile Fun Run/Walk will benefits Children’s National Medical Center. Serious runners, weekend and occasional joggers, walkers, and even strollers (for One-Mile Fun Run/Walk only) of all skill levels are invited to participate. The ChronoTrack race timing system and the disposable D-tag will be used this year.
“At Van Metre, giving back to the local community goes way back to our founder, Albert G. Van Metre. A lifelong resident of the greater Washington, DC area, he established a tradition of philanthropy focusing on local charities. As a homegrown business, perpetuating that legacy of local giving is our responsibility and our pride. Today, we honor Albert G. Van Metre’s memory by continuing this tradition of supporting the same local charities that were so important to him. It’s a calling we answer generously because it underscores our longstanding commitment to the community we call home.”
